Financial Journalist
About the role
The Financial Journalist will work full time on-site in Los Angeles, CA, producing clear, engaging coverage of personal finance, consumer behavior, and the evolving landscape of financial technology. Day-to-day responsibilities include researching market trends and policy changes, interviewing experts and users, and crafting articles, explainers, and data-driven stories that help readers make informed money decisions. The role involves translating complex financial concepts into accessible content, developing story ideas that align with SmartFinanceNerd’s privacy-first mission, and collaborating with editors, product teams, and new media specialists to publish across web, email, and social channels. The Financial Journalist will also monitor performance metrics, refine content formats, and maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness, and editorial integrity.
What we're looking for
- Strong foundation in Business Journalism and Finance, with the ability to interpret data, policies, and market developments for a general audience.
- Excellent Writing skills, including clear storytelling, concise explanatory writing, and the ability to adapt tone for different formats.
- Proficiency in Research, including sourcing primary data, verifying facts, and interviewing subject matter experts and everyday users.
- Familiarity with New Media, such as digital publishing tools, social platforms, newsletters, and multimedia storytelling.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Finance, Economics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated portfolio of published financial, business, or technology reporting.
- Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to ethical, non-discriminatory reporting.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an on-site newsroom environment and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
- Comfort with analytics tools (e.g., web or social metrics) and an interest in optimizing content for audience engagement is a plus.
